Kakanui

Kakanui is increasingly finding favour with couples, families and those seeking the fresh air, relaxation and recreational opportunities of a coastal village.

The township spreads north and south of the Kakanui River. The river and golden sand beaches provide fishing, boating and swimming opportunities. The ever popular Campbell’s Bay on the south side of the village offers great surfing and now hosts an annual surfing carnival. This magnificent beach popular with walkers, stretches south to All Day Bay. Coastal and inland roads provide for plenty of diversity and interest for cyclists.

A habitat for the little blue penguins has been established near the river mouth and these delightful birds can be freely observed at nightfall as they return to shore after a day out at sea.

Roadside stalls sell the famous Kakanui tomatoes, potatoes and other fresh locally grown produce. A local shop and liquor store sells most provisions as well as fish and chip takeaways, postal services and fuel. The licensed Seaview Café on the northern side of the village offers both café style dining for the family and takeaways. The local primary school has tennis courts which are available for community use. The historic Kakanui Presbyterian church also has services on a fairly regular basis.
